Two Wheels Through Bali

Two Wheels Through Bali

Lush green terraced rice fields in Bali

My first morning in Ubud, I woke up to the sound of a gamelan orchestra drifting through the jungle. I had arrived somewhere extraordinary. I rented a scooter for $5 a day and set off with no plan — the best decision I made on the whole trip.

The Tegallalang Rice Terraces

I pulled over at Tegallalang just as the morning mist was lifting off the terraces. The emerald green steps descend deep into a river valley, carved by generations of Balinese farmers over thousands of years. I walked down into the fields and sat for an hour, just watching the light change.

Hidden Waterfalls & Temple Finds

My scooter took me deeper into the jungle where I discovered Tibumana Waterfall — a 20-minute walk down a mossy path rewarded with a thundering cascade and an almost total absence of other tourists. I swam in the freezing pool beneath it for twenty minutes and couldn’t stop grinning.

A Word on Bali

Bali has a spirit about it that I can’t fully explain in words. The Balinese people carry a quiet pride and generosity that seeps into everything — the offerings left at every doorway, the temples draped in gold cloth, the ceremonies that spill out into the street without warning. It’s the only place I’ve visited where I immediately started planning my return trip.

I’ve been to places that were beautiful. Bali was different — it felt alive in a way that’s hard to explain without sounding strange. The island gave me something back that months of routine had quietly taken away. I handed in my scooter, caught my flight, and started looking at prices for a return trip before I’d even landed home.
