Chasing Sunsets in Santorini

Chasing Sunsets in Santorini

White and blue buildings in Santorini overlooking the sea

I almost didn’t go to Santorini. It felt too famous, too predictable, too Instagram. Then a friend said: ‘Go anyway.’ She was right. The island is famous for a reason — and being there in person is nothing like seeing it in photos.

Oia at Golden Hour

I arrived in Oia two hours before sunset and staked out a spot on the castle ruins. When the sun finally hit the caldera, the whole island turned amber and pink. Two hundred people gasped in unison. I was one of them.

The white-washed cube houses, blue-domed churches, and the sheer drama of the volcanic cliffs below — Santorini earns every superlative thrown at it.

Beyond the Postcard

I hired a local guide to take me away from the Oia crowds to Pyrgos, a quiet hilltop village with a medieval castle and zero tour groups. We ate grilled octopus at a taverna with a dozen plastic chairs and views to die for. This is the Santorini the influencers don’t show you.

Santorini isn’t subtle, and it doesn’t pretend to be. It knows exactly what it is — and if you let go of the pressure to have an ‘original’ experience and just show up for the beauty, it delivers completely. I left with a golden tan, a deep love for Greek wine, and the memory of a sunset that doesn’t need a filter.
