Lost in the Medina of Marrakech

Lost in the Medina of Marrakech

Bustling marketplace in Marrakech medina

Marrakech doesn’t ease you in gently. The moment you step through the ancient walls of the medina, the city grabs you by the collar: spice merchants calling from doorways, motorbikes threading impossible gaps, the smell of cumin and rosewater and leather all at once. It is overwhelming. It is completely alive.

The Souks

The souks are organised by trade — lantern makers, leather tanners, spice sellers, carpet weavers — each neighbourhood a world unto itself. I spent three hours in the dyers’ souk alone, watching wool being pulled from vats of saffron-yellow and indigo dye and draped across rooftops to dry in the afternoon sun.

Riad Life

I stayed in a riad — a traditional townhouse with an interior courtyard — tucked three alleyways deep into the medina. From outside, the door was nondescript, almost invisible. Inside: mosaic tiles, orange trees, candlelight, silence. This contrast is the secret magic of Marrakech. The chaos of the streets makes the sanctuary of the riad feel sacred.

I left Marrakech three days later with a small rug I didn’t need, a jar of argan oil, and the distinct feeling that I’d only scratched the surface. The city gets under your skin. I’m already thinking about going back — this time for longer, this time with better shoes, and this time I’ll leave the map at home on purpose.
